Just the Facts for Social Workers

1.Dementia afflicts 10% of people over age 65.
2.About one-third of older persons live alone.
3.Middle-age women are commonly the caregivers for demented persons.
4.Dementia produces intellectual and behavioral problems.
5.Urinary incontinence and behavioral problems are common reasons for placement into nursing homes.
6.Medications slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, i.e., placement into nursing homes by up to 2 years.
7.Most Alzheimer patients should discontinue driving.
8. Families should organize legal and social plans to minimize disruption of family life.
9.Participation by caregivers in support groups will diminish stress and enhance quality of life for both patient and caregiver.
10. Most care for demented patients is provided by family at home.
11.Caregivers should join support groups and take off at least _ day per week.
12.Out-of-town family needs dementia education to support in-town caregivers.
