Just the Facts for Nurse Practioners

1.Ten percent of patients over age 65 are demented.
2.Primary care physicians provide most care for persons with dementia.
3.Dementia may impair a person’s ability to remember instructions and report complaints.
4.New cholinesterase inhibitors slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by up to 2 years
5.Most of your nursing home patients will be demented
6.Vascular disease produces a small percentage of dementia, i.e., less than 10%.
7.Federal nursing home regulations control many aspects of prescriptions for psychoactive medications.
8.Delirium, a common problem in older patients, is present in 10-20% of elderly hospital admits.
