What is DETA?

Because of an aging population and a growing public health concern for those unfortunate victims of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the Alabama legislature passed the Dementia Education & Training Act (DETA) to educate caregivers. Through education, the DETA program encourages community-based services for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. DETA trains family caregivers and professionals in existing community programs and agencies about dementia and promotes education that allows Alabamians with dementia to live with dignity, independence, and respect. In 1993, the DETA program was passed and special education appropriation for statewide dementia training began
